The Derby will take place on Saturday 5th July, 2021 and we'll have the odds for the third Classic of the season here as soon as they are available...
What is The Derby?
The Derby is a Group One race run at Epsom Downs in June and is the showpiece contest of the entire Flat season in the UK.First run in 1780, The Derby is now Britain's richest race and while it is open to colts and fillies, it's contested by colts mainly with the best three-year-old fillies lining up in The Oaks the day before at Epsom. The fourth Classic of the season, The Derby is the middle leg of the Triple Crown - where it is sandwiched between the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the St Leger at Doncaster - but The Derby is the race all owners, trainers and jockeys want to win, and it's one of the sporting highlights of the year. Throughout history there have been some legendary winners of The Derby with more recently the likes of Nijinksy (1970), Shergar (1981) and Galileo (2001) just three of the legendary Flat performers to have etched their name in the roll of honour.
What happened in the 2020 Derby?
Aidan O'Brien landed a record eighth Derby victory as Serpentine lead from pillar to post to claim victory in the 2019 Classic. Entering the final furlong Emmet McNamara had stolen a lead against the field and would go on to win by five and a half lengths from Andrew Balding's Khalifa Sat in second place and Ballydoyle inmate Amrhran Na Bhfiann in third. The SP's of the first three home paid 25/1, 50/1, 66/1 in what was a massive result for the bookmakers.
