What is the Fillies' Mile?
The Fillies' Mile is a Group 1 juvenile race open to two-year-old fillies and takes place at Newmarket racecourse. Attracting some of the premier one mile fillies in training, the Fillies' Mile is regarded as a leading trial for the 1000 Guineas, which takes place over the course and distance the following season. Those that can produce a fine performance in the Fillies' Mile are often seen taking their chance in the 1000 Guineas with some going on to run a huge race in the classic.
Down the years there have been some top-class winners of the Fillies' Mile with Oh So Sharp the most notable name on the roll of honour. Having won the 1984 Fillies' Mile, Henry Cecil's starlet went on to win the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger. Other standout winners include Bosra Sham, who won the 1995 Fillies' Mile and 1996 1000 Guineas, while more recently Aidan O'Brien's Minding did the coveted Fillies' Mile/Guineas double.
What happened in the 2024 Fillies' Mile?
DESERT FLOWER won the race at two in a canter before her winter break and triumphant return at three in the 1000 Guineas for Charlie Appleby and William Buick. Will the 2025 renewal throw up a winner as high class?
