What is the Galway Hurdle?
The Galway Hurdle is a hugely competitive two-mile race run in the middle of the Galway Festival and it can often be targeted by those trainers with a plan to head to the Cheltenham Festival with their star performers later in their career. Royal Ascot may be the summer feature in the UK, but the Galway Festival is the highlight in Ireland, and the Galway Hurdle is one of the valuable blue riband events, and has an illustrious roll of honour.
Donald McCain's Overturn was a fine winner of the 2010 renewal, but it's mainly be dominated by Irish-trained contenders with the likes of Clondaw Warrior (2016) and Sharjah (2018) just two big names, with the latter of those pair going on to finish runner-up in the 2020 Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival to show the race can throw up a classy winner.
What happened in the 2020 Galway Hurdle?
The Willie Mullins-trained Aramon defied top weight to claim victory in the 2020 Galway Hurdle, where the Closutton inmate got the better of 40/1 outsider Hearts Of Trumps, while Petit Mouchoir and Hunters Call completed the placings in what was a thrilling renewal to the Thursday showpiece at the Galway Festival.
Class performance!
Grade 1-winning novice hurdler Aramon takes the Guinness Galway Hurdle in good style for Patrick and Willie Mullins 👏
