What is the Galway Plate?
The Galway Plate is a hugely competitive handicap chase run in the middle of the Galway Festival and takes place over a distance of two miles, six furlongs and 111 yards. A race that could throw up potential Cheltenham Festival clues in the future, the Galway Plate is a race awash with quality, experienced chasers taking on emerging youngsters, and with a bumper field going to post then it's an exciting betting heat for punters to enjoy.
First run in 1869, the Galway Plate is the star attraction of the seven day racing extravaganza and while the summer festivals like Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood often take centre stage in the sunshine, the Galway Festival in its own right stands prominently on the calendar, with the Galway Plate the meeting's flagship race with the likes of Ansar (2004, 2005) and Road To Riches (2014) just two notable winners in recent times.
What happened in the 2023 Galway Plate?
Gordon Elliott's Ash Tree Meadow was a fine lead-all-the-way winner of the Galway Plate as the 13/2 shot beat 14/1 chance Authorized Art.
