What is the Peterborough Chase?

The Peterborough Chase is a Grade Two race run over a trip of just above two miles and four furlongs at Huntingdon Racecourse each December.

There are sixteen fences to be jumped in the race which is open to horses aged four and above.

It is a mainstay of the jumps racing calendar and has been won by some excellent horses down the years. The Peterborough Chase is often used by trainers as a prep for bigger targets with the King George VI Chase at Kempton often the next stage for those that impress round the Cambridgeshire venue.

The history of the Peterborough Chase

The Peterborough Chase has an interesting history with the race coming under various guises and conditions since the first version of the race was ran in 1969.

Initially a three-mile handicap chase, it was dropped to a conditions event run over a trip of two-and-a-half-miles in 1978 with the race first called the Peterborough Chase in 1979. The race was perhaps best known for being one of the best midweek races of the season with older readers likely to remember it taking place on a Tuesday until 1997.

The Grade Two affair was run on a Sunday for the first time in 2014 and for the time being at least, it appears to be staying in that slot. What is not in doubt is that we have seen some legendary equine stars win the Peterborough Chase over the past forty years, ensuring it retains a special place in the hearts of many national hunt enthusiasts.

Who is the most iconic winner of the Peterborough Chase?

The list of past winners for the Peterborough Chase is a stellar one with some excellent names winning the race down the years, including Remittance Man, One Man and Best Mate.

There is a stand-out name though, even above those three, and that is Edredon Bleu who made the Peterborough Chase his own during a stellar career. The Henrietta Knight trained star won the race four years on the bounce between 1998 and 2001 and has since had the race named after him as a tribute. The famous horse was good enough to win a Champion Chase and a King George during his career but it was Huntingdon where he was at his best with four successes that are likely to live long in the memory.

Are there any trials for the Peterborough Chase?

There are no clear trials for the Peterborough Chase itself but punters can put together one or two clues about potential runners when trying to get an idea of the field. The Ryanair Chase from the previous season is always a good starting point for potential runners, while the same can be said of the 1965 Chase at Ascot which takes place a couple of weeks before Huntingdon, Charbel an example of that last season.

Who is the most successful jockey in the Peterborough Chase?

There are two jockeys at the top of the Peterborough Chase standings with Richard Dunwoody and Jim Culloty both winning the race numerous times during their careers. Dunwoody won the race on Very Promising (1987), Remittance Man (1992), Travado (1995) and One Man (1997), while Culloty tasted success on Edredon Bleu (1998, 1999 & 2000) and Best Mate (2002).

Who is the most successful trainer in the Peterborough Chase?

Henrietta Knight was a legendary trainer and nowhere was that more evident than in the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon. Knight won the race a remarkable eight times with Edredon Bleu (1998, 1999, 2000 & 2001), Best Mate (2002), Impek (2005) and Racing Demon (2006 & 2007).
