What is the Irish St Leger?
The Irish St Leger is the Irish equivalent of the St Leger at Doncaster, and is run over a distance of one mile and six furlongs. It is the final classic of the Irish Flat season, and traditionally takes place on the second day of Irish Champions Weekend - which tends to fall on the day after the Doncaster classic. Unlike with the Town Moor classic, the Irish Leger is often used as a tune up race for older horses before more prestigious targets, such as the Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot or the Melbourne Cup.
What happened in the 2020 Irish St Leger?
Dermot Weld's Search For A Song bagged back-to-back Irish St Leger crowns, as the 7/1 shot reeled in the front-running Fujaira Prince to land the coveted Curragh contest by two lengths. In a hugely entertaining finish, Fujaira Prince kicked for him, but the Ebor winner was unable to maintain his lead as Search For A Song grabbed the lead and fended off Fujaira Prince and Twilight Payment, who bagged third spot.
