What is the July Cup?
The July Cup is a prestigious Group 1 race run over six furlongs and takes place at Newmarket's July Festival. Open to horses aged three years or older, it can be a race that sees emerging, young sprinters lock horns with older adversaries, and it can be a race that sees three-year-olds that have competed in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot do battle with horses that have lined up in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at the Royal meeting.
First run in 1876, the July Cup attracts the premier sprinters from the UK and Ireland, and can sometimes be the target for the top speedsters in the US and Australia, and that is why it's an integral part of the Global Sprint Challenge between 2008 and 2017. It has been won by some of the finest sprinters in training with the likes of Oasis Dream (2003), Starspangledbanner (2010) and Harry Angel (2017) all tasting victory in the race.
What happened in the 2020 July Cup?
The 2020 renewal of the July Cup was an open one, and the market was headed by the three-year-old Golden Horde, who had won the previous month's Commonwealth Cup. He, along with the three protagonists from the Diamond Jubilee Stakes - Hello Youmzain (first), Sceptical (third) and Khaadem (fourth) made a sustained bid, though it was the improving Oxted who surged through to take things up, and seal a first Group 1 win for the fledging star Cieren Fallon Jr.
