Contested over a distance of one mile, three furlongs and 219 yards, the September Stakes is one of the all-weather highlights of the entire year, but it can also be a race that is used as a springboard to more prestigious races later in the seasons. You can see horses running in this event before going on to line up in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, so it can often attract some quality runners. September Stakes Tips
LION'S PRIDE has been disappointing of late but can be excused as those poor runs were on turf. He reverts to the all-weather here at Kempton and has won two of three starts here, including beating the now high class Middle Earth. John Gosden has won four of the last six renewals of this race and Lion's Pride can make it five in seven.
What is the September Stakes?
The September Stakes is a Group 3 race run at Kempton Park and is open to horses aged three years or older. Run over a distance just shy of 1m 4f, the September Stakes has often been a race targeted by trainers that are looking to bag big prizes in the latter stages of the season. Although it holds its own stature, the September Stakes has occasionally been used as a trial for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and in 2018 the John Gosden-trained Enable eased to victory before going to land the Arc in France.
First held in 1979, the race was always run on the turf, but since Kempton put in their all-weather track since 2006 the race has been run on the Polytrack, thus adding a new dimension to the race. However, some smart performers have excelled on the all-weather and in 2015 Derby runner-up Jack Hobbs impressed when landing the spoils for Godolphin, but Enable's win in 2018 will be the most prestigious, as she sauntered to success to enhance the reputation of the race.
What happened in the 2023 September Stakes?
Sir Michael Stoute's Bay Bridge outclassed his rivals to land the 2023 September Stakes to bag the prize for favourite backers.
