Laytown is possibly the most unique venue for horse racing as once a year crowds flock to the Meath area to watch horses run on the beach.
Since 1868 when the first meeting was recorded from Laytown, it has become an annual tradition with big crowds flocking to the beach to see the only action under rules that is run on a beach.
A course that is about six furlongs long attracts some of the top trainers from Ireland and Dermot Weld is just one of the big names who have openly admitted their love for the annual race meeting.
It was often used as a warm-up for some horses who were bound for the Galway Festival, but now it is run in September, trainers just enter their horses for Laytown success rather than using it as a stepping stone to bigger things.
