What is the Irish Champion Stakes?
The Irish Champion Stakes is a Group 1 race run at Leopardstown and is open to horses aged three years or older. Contested over 1m 2f, it is regarded as one of the flagship Group 1 races on the Irish calendar, and has been attracted some of the stars of the sport. Attracting a host of top notch three-year-olds, it can also see some older, proven contenders sparkle on the big stage.
First run in 1976, the Irish Champion Stakes has been won by some of the greats of the Flat. Sadler's Wells was a memorable winner of the 1984 renewal, while more recently Dylan Thomas (2006, 2007), Sea The Stars (2009) and Golden Horn (2015), who both tasted victory in the Derby at Epsom Downs, have all been top-class winners of the showpiece event.
