What is the Midlands Grand National?

The Midlands Grand National is a Listed National Hunt handicap chase run at Uttoxeter over four miles and two furlongs, and it takes place at the Staffordshire racecourse in the middle of March.

One of the longest races on the Jumps calendar, the Midlands Grand National can attract not only some of the elite stayers from the UK, but horses can also come across from Ireland, and it can sometimes be used for horses that could run in the Grand National at Aintree later in their careers. With 24 fences to jump during the stamina test, only the strongest shall prevail.

What happened in the 2020 Midlands Grand National?

A competitive renewal saw a tough betting heat for punters to decipher, but it was the Paul Nicholls-trained Truckers Lodge that pulled clear of the gutsy Captain Drake to claim the marathon victory at Uttoxeter by 18 lengths. Prominent throughout the race under a confident ride from Lorcan Williams, the Ditcheat inmate, who went off 6/1, went to the front four fences from home and gradually pulled away of his rivals to claim the prize. Captain Drake stayed on best of the rest to bag second spot, while Joe Farrell was third and Sheneededtherun was fourth.

The history of the Midlands Grand National

First run in May 1969, the Midlands Grand National has been one of the main targets for National Hunt trainers with those horses that relish the marathon trips over fences. Having been run over four-and-a-half miles at times, it was the longest race on the calendar, but a slight drop in trip in recent times means it no longer holds that status.

However, with it taking place the day after the Cheltenham Festival and the sporting world talking about horse racing then it benefits in terms of coverage with punters and racegoers alike flocking to having a bet on the race.

Uttoxeter's highlight of the year, the Midlands Grand National can attract some notable horses and it's no surprise to see runners that feature here going on to run a fine race in the Grand National at Aintree.

Who is the most iconic winner of the Midlands Grand National?

A seven-year-old by the name of Synchronised won the 2010 Midlands Grand National for Jonjo O'Neill and AP McCoy, and the JP McManus-owned star went on to become a superstar of the Jumps, and two years later in 2012 he went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.

A dour stayer, Synchronised also won the 2010 Welsh Grand National, but having used victory in the Uttoxeter race as a springboard to Gold Cup glory at Cheltenham will mean he certainly goes down in history as the most iconic winner of this race.

Are there any trials for the Midlands Grand National?

During the season there's an abundance of National races taking place up and down the country with the likes of the Devon National, Sussex National and Eider Chase just three of those races that can be used as trials for the Midlands Grand National.

Who is the most successful jockey in the Midlands Grand National?

Brendan Powell tasted victory in the saddle in 1996 and 1999, while Norman Williamson is the final jockey to ride the winner twice having piloted Lucky Lane to victory in 1995 and The Bunny Boiler to success in 2002.
