What is the Mildmay Novices' Chase?

The Mildmay Novices’ Chase is Grade 1 race for novice chasers, run over a trip of just shy of three miles and one furlong (three miles and 210 yards). 

The race is usually contested by the main protagonists from the previous month’s RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, and regularly serves as a key pointer for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

What happened in the 2019 Mildmay Novices' Chase

Although six headed to post for the 2019 Mildmay Novices’ Chase, the betting suggested that it would be a match race between the RSA Chase winner Topofthegame, and the JLT runner-up Lostintranslation.

With Lostintranslation having his first try at this trip, Topofthegame was sent off as the 11/10 favourite at what was seen as his optimum distance, though he was below form on the day and struggled to land a blow on Lostintranslation, who picked up the lead two out and sauntered clear to win by six lengths. Both horses look to be fine staying chasers in the making, though, and could well return for a rematch in the 2020 Aintree Bowl.

The history of the Mildmay Novices' Chase

Established in 1981, the Mildmay has grown into one of the premier novice chases of the entire season.

The race boasts an esteemed roll of honour, and some notable names have won the race over the years, including the subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Native River.

The race was upgraded to Grade 1 status in 2016, and is regularly targeted by the winner of the RSA Chase, with the last horse to complete that particular double being Might Bite in 2017.

Who is the most iconic winner of the Mildmay Novices' Chase?

The near 40-year history of the Mildmay Novices' Chase has seen some classy horses claim the Mildmay, but it is of course difficult to pick just one winner.

The 2008 winner Big Buck's is worthy of a mention for all that he is best known for his exploits as a staying hurdler, while the 2016 winner Native River would go on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following season.  

On balance though, it is the 1982 Mildmay winner Burrough Hill Lad who is perhaps the most iconic winner of the race. Burrough Hill Lad subsequently developed into one of the best staying chasers of his generation, winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the Hennessy Gold Cup, the Welsh National and the King George VI Chase during his career.

Are there any trials for the Mildmay Novices' Chase?

The path to the Mildmay Novices’ Chase is a defined one, and the key players from both the RSA Chase and the JLT Novices’ Chase at the previous month’s Cheltenham Festival regularly take their chance here. Earlier in the season, it’s worth keeping an eye on the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown, the Dipper Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham and the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton.

The winning most jockey in the history of the Mildmay Novices’ Chase is Richard Dunwoody, with four wins. Dunwoody’s four wins in the Mildmay came courtesy of Against The Grain (1987), Sparkling Flame (1991), Banjo (1995) and Cyborgo (1997) to his name in the race.

Who is the most successful trainer in the Mildmay Novices' Chase?

Nicky Henderson has enjoyed five Mildmay wins so far during his career, with Sparkling Flame (1991), Irish Hussar (2003), Burton Port (2010), Might Bite (2017) and Terrefort (2018) all scoring for the Seven Barrows handler.
