14:04 Newcastle - Jenningsbet Nun Street Newcastle Open Now Chipchase Stakes
A real mouthful of a name for the first race I'll cover here, but I do think the winner will be easier to remember than the race title. Those who were reading my Royal Ascot tips last week - Hi Mum - will have seen I had a splurge of non-runners in and amongst some average selections but one I was disappointed in particular to see miss out was KINROSS, who I thought had a right chance on Saturday.
Never mind, a week later and a good few hundred miles north I once again think he has a fantastic chance in this Group 3 up in Newcastle. His draw in three isn't ideal but is by no means as abhorrent as a bad draw would be at a track with a stronger bias and I'm convinced he has a marked class edge over the field here.
He has proven himself at six and seven furlongs but six on the tapeta should be just fine and while I respect Spycatcher the second favourite, if Kinross is in anything like the form he showed last season he should simply be too good for these. He is the Saturday Nap at around 3/1.
14:35 Newcastle - Northumberland Vase
There has already been some money for the horse who finished third in this race FAYLAQ to go a few places better in 2024 and as long as his price stays above 6/1, he looks a knocking each-way proposition for Jim Goldie. The reasons to back him are plentiful in a race that - before it begins at least - looks no stronger than last year's renewal.
Firstly, despite not really running any poor races since this day last season he gets in here off six pounds less than the mark he was allotted when charging home for third last season. He has not won in a long while now - in fact since September 2019, gulp - but in his first start this season ran with immense credit here for fourth after fluffing the start. That has become something of a theme and he frustratingly did it again last time out at Hamilton, but still rallied to momentarily look in contention before settling for third place.
He is yet to run over a marathon trip this season and one suspects after how close he came last year despite having to switch numerous times when searching for a clear passage in the final furlongs, the Jim Goldie team have had a redemption dated circled in thick red pen on their calendar. The winless run is definitely a worry, but the dwelling in the stalls should at least be something he can overcome over this trip and he will do for me as an each-way lock on the day.
15:10 Newcastle - Northumberland Plate
Billy has penned a full race preview of the Northumberland Plate which you can read below and see which horse he will be backing and who he rates as the main dangers...
