Today's Racing Guide: Take on Brando in the Abernant Stakes

There's racing at Newmarket and Lingfield on Friday.

With British racing now back on our screens, Nick Seddon has picked out five interesting pointers from today's action at Newcastle and Newmarket...

1. A Godolphin newcomer is all the rage in the betting

The opening race at Newmarket this afternoon is the first division of a seven-furlong fillies' maiden, and it's interesting to see a strong market move for the four-year-old newcomer Pure Beauty, who's as short at 7/4 at the time of writing having opened up at 7/1 last night. She's pretty late to be making her debut, and while she doesn't stand out like a sore thumb on paper, it's interesting to see her being so well supported this morning. The recognisable blue silks of the powerful Godolphin operation will certainly have helped, but it seems likely that she's been showing plenty at home for Saeed bin Suroor. At a much bigger price, it  could be worth taking a look at the Lope De Vega filly Wolflet at around the 18/1 mark for the John Gosden team. She's bred to be useful, being the first foal out of a listed winner, and while she'll need further in time, it would be no surprise to see her run well if her stamina is allowed to come into play.

2. It could pay to play the field in the Abernant

Unsurprisingly, Brando is all the rage in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes at Newmarket this afternoon (14:25), which is no surprise bearing in mind that he's won two of the last three renewals and ran with plenty of credit on several starts in Group 1 company last summer. However, he's into the twilight of his career these days as an eight-year-old, and rather needed the run when shocked by 66/1 outsider Keystroke in this race last year. Keystroke is back to defend his crown, though with there likely to be a dearth of pace on offer, the front-running mare Breathtaking Look could offer plenty of value at 14/1 if in the same mood as when slipping the field in the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes over seven furlongs at Doncaster last September.

3. The Coronation Cup takes centre stage

We have some Group 1 action to look forward to at Newmarket this afternoon, with the Coronation Cup. It's away from its spiritual home of Epsom this year, but there's a fascinating field of seven, which includes the multiple Group 1-winning stayer Stradivarius, and you can read a full preview of the race by clicking the link below.

4. Watson can strike at Lingfield

As we've already mentioned this week, Archie Watson has a fine record with his juvenile runners, and one of his smarter prospects on paper makes his bow in the 13:30 at Lingfield races in the form of Igotatext. He makes plenty of appeal on pedigree, being closely related to the very smart Kingsgate Native, and he's a reasonably well found second-favourite in the market this morning. Hollie Doyle takes the ride, and it would be no surprise should this particular contest prove to be a warm heat in hindsight - with each of Bowman, Mark Of The Man and Brutal Lion looking potentially useful on paper.

5. Will we see two more Epsom winners?

The Lingfield Derby and Oaks Trials hit the jackpot last year in producing a duo of subsequent classic winners in Anapurna and Anthony Van Dyck, and while it will be a big ask for the two contests to prove quite as informative this year, both look interesting heats on paper. In the Oaks Trial, Miss Yoda is a warm order in the betting after a fine effort to finish second in the Group 3 Zetland Stakes at Newmarket last October, and should she run well, it would provide a timely form boost for Berkshire Rocco - who runs in the Derby Trial 35 minutes later.
