ITV7 Racing Tips: Santiago and Ghaiyyath to shine

There's some top notch Flat racing at Doncaster among the ITV7.
There's some top notch Flat racing at Doncaster among the ITV7.

Steve Chambers takes an in-depth look at Saturday's racing on ITV - which includes both the St Leger and Irish Champion Stakes - and tries to pick out all seven winners that make up the ITV7...

Chester 14:05 - ChesterRaces Supports The Injured Jockeys Fund Stand Cup Stakes

We kick off the ITV7 with action from the tight turns of Chester and a small, but select field of five runners go to post giving ITV7 punters an ideal chance to kick off the afternoon with a winner. Sir Michael Stoute's Alignak and Andrew Balding's Morando battle it out for favouritism, at the time of writing, but it's the former that can prevail. A winner at Newcastle on his comeback run this season, he has run creditably in a listed event at Haydock before finishing a decent third in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury, Third in that Group contest behind St Leger hope Hukum, Alignak finished in front of Morando that day, and there's no reason as to why the form can be reversed on Saturday.

Doncaster 14:25 - Portland Handicap

A devilishly difficult renewal of the Portland Handicap sees a bumper field head to the 5f 143y start, and the likes of Soldier's Minute and A Momentofmadness sit prominently in the betting, with both standing a huge chance of claiming the sprint handicap. But, it's worth looking further down the betting for a more attractive value option and Mick Channon's improving Barbill appears to still be on the upgrade, and could well possibly use victory in this race for a springboard to Group company. The four-year-old has recorded wins at Chester and Haydock already this season, but did disappoint in the Stewards' Cup in between those wins. Still rated 100, Barbill will drop back in trip, but has enough pace to play a starring role, and providing Tom Marquand can get him sitting prominently in the closing stages, then he can pull clear of his rivals to land the prize.

Chester 14:40 - Racing Together How Sport Helps Others Handicap

We return to the Roodee for race three in the ITV7 and are treated to a trappy handicap over 1m 2f 70y. David Simcock's Prejudice has been running well of late and looks to stand a huge chance, but having finished second on his last two outings then it could be worth taking him on with Lawn Ranger. The Michael Attwater-trained five-year-old was last seen winning at Chester, where he beat recent Doncaster winner Strait Of Hormuz by a neck, and having only been upped 2 lb by the handicapper for that success he can make it back-to-back wins at the track. Drawn in stall three, he will face another notable adversary in Maydanny, but if Lawn Ranger can emulate his last run at Chester then he can prevail.

Doncaster 15:00 - Park Stakes

A winner in 2015, Limato is bidding for a second Park Stakes victory at Doncaster on Saturday, but the Henry Candy-trained eight-year-old will face a stiff task to recapture the Group 2 prize. He was a fine winner of the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket last time out, but this is tougher with the likes of Wichita and One Master two classy performers taking their chance here. However, it's the Roger Varian-trained three-year-old Molatham that is worth backing here, as having bounded to glory in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot he was then seen finishing fifth in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat, which is top notch form. While he may not be a Group 1 horse yet, a drop back to Group 2 should see him return to winning ways, as he can down his older, more experienced rivals.

Leopardstown 15:10 - Matron Stakes

Some top class Irish Flat action adds significant depth to this week's ITV7 and the Group 1 Matron Stakes is a hugely competitive renewal with some of the premier fillies and mares in training doing battle. It will also see an epic clash between Aidan O'Brien and son Donnacha, who saddle the front two in the betting. O'Brien senior will saddle Peaceful, who was a fine winner of the Irish 1000 Guineas earlier in the season, and she will look to frank that classic form with Fancy Blue, who she finished in front of that day. However Donnacha O'Brien's Fancy Blue has come on leaps and bounds this season and has built on that Guineas run and won the Prix de Diane and Nassau Stakes. Those two Group 1 wins show that she is much better now, and she can prevail in a sensational renewal.

Doncaster 15:35 - St Leger

The final classic of the season, the St Leger will serve up a tough conundrum for punters as a plethora of runners heading to the 1m 6f start will fancy their chances of claiming the Group 1 prize at Doncaster. Royal Ascot winner Pyledriver followed up his success with a taking win in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, and with that being regarded as one of the premier trials for the Leger then he has to be respected. Hukum and Galileo Chrome are another brace of contenders that are upwardly mobile and will be relishing the test that a St Leger brings, but the one to be with is Santiago, who can hand Aidan O'Brien a sixth St Leger. Magnificent in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot, Santiago then went on to sparkle in the Irish Derby, and a repeat of that Group 1 effort should see him prove too classy for his rivals, and the Ballydoyle raider is the one to side with.

Leopardstown 16:10 - Irish Champion Stakes

Top quality racing continues from Leopardstown, and this time we turn our attentions to the Irish Champion Stakes, which is another Group 1 treat and will see the Godolphin superstar Ghaiyyath head into the contest as the red-hot favourite. While he will have to down the likes of Japan and Magical, who are top notch Group 1 performers in their own right, Ghaiyyath can continue his sparkling campaign and looks to be a cut above his rivals. Wins in the Coral-Eclipse and Juddmonte International Stakes this season have rocketed Ghaiyyath into the limelight, and with the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in his sights, the Charlie Appleby-trained charge can outclass his rivals here and land the spoils for favourite backers.
