Types Of Horse Racing Tips

Win
A win bet is the most straightforward type of bet you can make, as it’s simply a bet on which horse will win a particular race. If your pick crosses the finish line first, you’ll receive the specified payout. Win bets are generally less risky than other options as you’re only relying on one selection to come good.
Each Way
An each way bet is effectively two bets: the first being on the horse to win, and the second bet on the horse to place. The designated places vary across different races depending on the number of runners, but ‘placing’ typically refers to finishing in the top 2, 3, or 4. Horse racing tipsters may recommend an each way bet on the Grand National, for example, as there are lots of runners in a highly competitive race.
Double
Horse racing tipsters may also recommend a double bet. Here you’re betting on two horses to win two different races. For the bet to win, both selections have to come good. If one horse wins and the other is pipped to the post, you’ll lose the bet and your stake. Placing a double can be a good way to increase the potential payout if you’re betting on two favourites with short odds, for example.
Lucky 15
A Lucky 15 consists of four selections across 15 different bets: four singles, six doubles, four trebles, and a fourfold accumulator. Tipsters can recommend four horses for upcoming races and the Lucky 15 assembles them into multiple betting combinations. Punters choose a unit stake, let’s say £1, and the total cost will be 15 times this amount — £15 in this example. At a minimum, you’ll receive some return if one of your horses wins, thanks to the single bets. If more of your selections win, your winnings will increase.
Accumulator
An accumulator is a bet with four or more selections bundled into one. This can be a combination of different types of bets, such as wins and each way bets, but the accumulator only pays out if all of the selections are successful. As a result, accumulators typically carry greater risk but larger potential payouts.

Cheltenham Festival
Part of the National Hunt jump racing calendar, Cheltenham is a four-day festival that takes place in Gloucestershire in March. The festival features several Grade I races such as the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Queen Mother Champion Chase, Stayers’ Hurdle, and Champion Hurdle. In terms of prize money, Cheltenham is second only to the Grand National. The festival usually coincides with Saint Patrick’s Day and is popular with Irish visitors, while Irish trainers have also been particularly successful in recent years. Its electric atmosphere is epitomised by the famous ‘Cheltenham roar’.
Cheltenham Gold Cup
The Cheltenham Gold Cup takes place during the Cheltenham Festival each March. The event is a steeplechase run over a distance of about 3 miles and 2½ furlongs, and is open to horses aged five years and over. It’s the most prestigious National Hunt event and the most valuable non-handicap chase in Britain — in 2023, the total prize fund was £625,000.
Grand National
The Grand National is the most valuable jump race in Europe, with a prize fund of £1 million. The event dates back to 1839 and is held at Aintree Racecourse in Merseyside. Runners compete in a handicap steeplechase over a distance of about 4 miles and 2½ furlongs. The course consists of two laps, with horses jumping over 30 fences before crossing the finish line. Broadcast live on free-to-air television since 1960, it’s an event that draws in many Brits who don’t normally watch or bet on horse racing, with many having a flutter once a year.
Epsom Derby
Also known as the Derby Stakes, the Epsom Derby is a Group 1 flat horse race open to three-year-old colts and fillies. Taking place at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey on the first Saturday of June each year, the distance covers 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 10 yards. The event was first run back in 1780 and is the most prestigious of the five British Classics — the long-standing horse races run during the traditional flat racing season.
Royal Ascot
The Royal Ascot is held at the Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire for five days every year in mid-June. It is known not only as a racing event but as one of high fashion and world-class entertainment. The most prestigious event of the Royal Scot is the Gold Cup, a flat race traditionally held on the third day of the meeting. Each day begins with the Royal Procession, where the monarch and other members of the Royal Family arrive along the track in horse-drawn landaus, before spending the day watching the races from the Royal Enclosure.
