The Northumberland Plate is a handicap race run over a shade over two miles at Newcastle, and is one of the toughest betting heats on the Flat calendar. First run in 1833, the Northumberland Plate is one of the most valuable two-mile handicaps in Europe, and it's no surprise that it attracts a hugely competitive field.
