What is the Wolferton Stakes?
A relatively new race on the Flat calendar, the Wolferton Stakes takes place on the final day of Royal Ascot and is a Listed event for horses aged four years or older.
Inaugurated in 2002, the Wolferton Stakes was introduced to the Royal Ascot schedule after the meeting was extended to five days, but it's a race that has grown in stature and can be a race that is used as a stepping stone for horses aiming to venture into Group company. Moving to the first day of Royal Ascot in 2018, the Wolferton Stakes dropped its handicap status as well and is now a conventional Listed race that is often a hugely competitive finale on the Tuesday afternoon.
What happened in the 2020 Wolferton Stakes?
Roger Varian's Mountain Angel was a hugely impressive winner of the Wolferton Stakes as the James Doyle-ridden 8/1 shot sprinted to the front down the inside of his rivals and duly scooted clear in fine fashion to beat the staying on Sir Dragonet, who was no closer than at the finish. Regal Reality finished third in a race dominated by the winner, who could be destined for Group company next time out.
