What is the Tingle Creek Chase?
The Tingle Creek Chase is a Grade One race run over a trip of two miles at Sandown Park at the start of December.
Thirteen fences are jumped in what is one of the key trials of the year for the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. The race itself is a prestigious affair in its own right with some of the countries best two-milers clashing for the first time at one of the sport's great venues.
The famous railway fences down the back straight at Sandown offer one of the toughest tests of jumping in the sport and provide the perfect spectacle for the fastest horses in the national hunt game.
What happened in the 2023 Tingle Creek Chase?
Nicky Henderson's Jonbon was a class above his rivals as the hot favourite stormed to glory in the Tingle Creek Chase in 2023, as the 30/100 favourite beat Edwardstone by over two lengths.
The history of the Tingle Creek Chase
Named after the excellent Tingle Creek who was plying his trade in the 1970's, the Tingle Creek Chase was first run in 1979 as a handicap race before being promoted to Grade One status in 1994.
Since then, the race has grown with every passing year. It is possible to make a case for the Tingle Creek having the best roll of honour outside of the Cheltenham Festival with every years winner being as impressive as the year previous.
Multiple winners of the race have gone on to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase in the same season to highlight its importance even further.
The ultimate test of speed and jumping, the Tingle Creek is a special contest and one of the favourite fixtures on the calendar for any National Hunt enthusiast and looks set to stay that way for many years to come.
Who is the most iconic winner of the Tingle Creek Chase?
Picking the most iconic winner of the Tingle Creek is harder than picking your favourite child.
The list of legends to have won this race is unparalleled with Desert Orchid, Flagship Uberalles, Kauto Star, Master Minded, Sprinter Sacre and the aforementioned Altior just a smattering of names to fall under that bracket. On this occasions though we are going to go with Moscow Flyer who famously won the race twice, including in 2004 when he beat Azertyuiop and Well Chief in a race widely regarded as one of the best of the 21st century.
That 2004 race will live long in the memory and with Moscow Flyer coming out on top that glorious day, the Irish trained legend deserves his place at the top.
Are there any trials for the Tingle Creek Chase?
The Tingle Creek falls quite early in the season so it isn't unusual for a horse to start their campaign off at Sandown, but there are one or two races to watch in October and November that could produce a runner or two. The Shloer Chase at Cheltenham can offer potential Tingle Creek horses a prep run before but in truth it is better to look back at the previous season for likely runners.
The Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Arkle are the two most likely races to produce runners for the Tingle Creek with the novices often stepping up to take on their elders at Sandown.
Who is the most successful jockey in the Tingle Creek Chase?
We have seen the majority of the legendary jockeys win this race down the years but it is Richard Dunwoody who sits on top with five wins to his name. Dunwoody won the race on Lefrak City (1985), Waterloo Boy (1991 & 1992) and Sound Man (1995 & 1996) during his illustrious career.
