About the Ebor Handicap
The Ebor Handicap is one of the feature handicap races to take place during the Flat season, and it takes place on the final day of the Ebor Festival at York. Run over a distance just shy of 1m 6f, the Ebor Handicap is one of the most valuable prizes on the Flat racing calendar and sees a multitude of top-notch staying handicappers lining up to claim victory.
First run in 1843, the Ebor Handicap now has prize money in the region of £1m, so unsurprisingly, it's a big target for all those with a classy staying handicapper, and down the years it has seen some notable winners, who have gone on to be star stayers and sometimes looked to line up in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Sea Pigeon (1979) won the Ebor before going on to star in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, while Sergeant Cecil (2005) was another notable winner of the race.
A punt was landed from the Henry De Bromhead team with MAGICAL ZOE in 2024 as she was an incredibly well backed winning 11/2 favourite for the Irish raiders.
