What is the Yorkshire Cup?
The Yorkshire Cup is a Group 2 race run over one mile, five furlongs, and 188 yards and is open to horses aged four years or older. Taking place in May, the Yorkshire Cup holds an ideal place on the racing calendar for those horses that are looking to line up in the Ascot Gold Cup at Royal Ascot the following month, with some horses tasting victory in both races.
First run in 1927, the Yorkshire Cup has been won by some fine horses with Ardross (1981 & 1982) and Sergeant Cecil (2007) just two star names on the illustrious roll of honour. However, in recent times it's been Stradivarius that has been the star attraction and the John Gosden-trained winner has tasted victory on more than one occasion and the stayer has gone on to claim Gold Cup glory at Royal Ascot the same season.
