About The Brown Advisory Novices' Chase
The Brown Advisory Novices' Chase is a Grade 1 novice chase, which is run over three miles and 80 yards, and is traditionally held on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival, which takes place on a Wednesday in March. The race regularly produces future Cheltenham Gold Cup prospects.
The Brown Advisory Novices' Chase began life as the Broadway Novices’ Chase and was first run in 1946. Although a Grade 1 contest in its own right, the RSA Chase has developed a reputation for producing future Cheltenham Gold Cup winners, and each of Denman (won the RSA in 2007), Bobs Worth (2012) and Lord Windermere (2013) have won both races this century.
Ballyburn was a hot favourite for the 2025 Brown Advisory, but he made a batch of awful mistakes and his stablemate LECKY WATSON went on to win at 20/1.
Brown Advisory Novices' Chase Tips
Early Cheltenham tips focus on how the race is shaping up rather than firm selections, with clearer betting opportunities emerging closer to the Festival. The Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase picture for 2026 is now a lot easier to read in the odds grid, with FINAL DEMAND losing clear favouritism after a loss at the DRF. He is just about still the one the market keeps coming back to, but there is a proper challenger in KAID D'AUTHIE, who beat him fair and square at Leopardstown and sits near the very top of the lists. He looks the obvious danger if he stays on this path. Just behind the front pair, the next layer is starting to form with names like THE BIG WESTERNER prominent in the single-figure prices, while KITZBUHEL fluffed his lines on a raid of Sandown but is also in the mix and being priced up as a serious player due to his defeats of Kaid D'Authie in the past. Plans can still shuffle in novice chases as the spring targets firm up, but the market has already tightened around a small core group rather than a wide-open field.

Who is the most iconic winner of the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase?
Several winners of the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase have gone on to win the biggest prize in Jumps racing, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, later in their careers, though none to have achieved the feat are perhaps quite so popular as the great Denman proved to be. Although useful over hurdles, Denman came into his own over fences, and capped off a stunning novice chasing season by winning the RSA Chase by ten lengths, landing a big gamble and finishing the season unbeaten in the process.
Denman would continue to progress the following season, winning the race now known as the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury and extending his unbeaten run over fences by lowering the colours of the great Kauto Star in the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Denman would subsequently suffer heart problems, something which marred his 2008-09 season, but he finished a brave second to Kauto Star in the 2009 Gold Cup nonetheless, and roared back to form in the 2009 Ladbrokes Trophy, giving away mountains of weight away to the field in the progress. That would prove to be Denman’s final victory, but he would continue to win the hearts of everyone in racing, finishing second in each of the next two renewals in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and settling down for one final tussle with his old rival Kauto Star in the closing stages of the 2011 renewal, before the pair were ultimately outmatched by the younger legs of Nicky Henderson’s Long Run. Denman’s final appearance ended on a low note, when pulled-up in the Aintree Bowl the following month, but he bowed out as one of the greats nonetheless.
