Cheltenham Tips

What is the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle?

The Fred Winter Juvenile Hurdle is a Grade 3 handicap hurdle race, held on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival, Ladies Day, which traditionally takes place on a Wednesday in March. The race is run over two miles and 87 yards, and like the Triumph Hurdle is exclusively for four-year-olds. Although it is traditionally viewed as being second-best behind the Triumph, the Fred Winter has produced some smart performers in its own right since its conception, including the 2016 winner Diego Du Charmil, who has gone on to become a Grade 1-winning chaser.

The history of the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle

The Fred Winter Juvenile Hurdle was introduced in 2005 as part of the extension of the festival from three days to four. It is named after Fred Winter, who was a legendary figure in National Hunt racing, and the inaugural running was won by the Paul Nolan-trained Dabiroun. The race began life as a listed handicap, but was upgraded to Grade 3 status in 2009. It’s built up a reputation as one of the most difficult betting heats of the entire festival, something shown by the fact that the winner has returned home at a price of 33/1 or higher on five occasions since its conception.

What happened in the 2021 Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle?

Noel Meade's Jeff Kidder was a shock 80/1 winner of the 2021 renewal, as the Irish raider pulled two lengths clear of Saint Sam, who in turn was ahead of Elham Valley in one of the shock results of the entire Cheltenham Festival.

Who is the most iconic winner of the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle?

The Fred Winter is still very much in its infancy having started life in just 2005, though the 2016 winner Diego Du Charmil has proven to be a particularly talented alumnus of the race. He didn’t take long to endear himself to punters, either, landing a gamble when winning this race on British debut for the Paul Nicholls yard in 2016, before landing another minor touch when winning the Scottish County Hurdle at Musselburgh in February 2017. Diego Du Charmil was switched to fences the following season and although he missed the 2018 Cheltenham Festival in favour of other targets, he proved his talents nonetheless, winning the Grade 1 Maghull Novices’ Chase at Aintree in 2018. The shrewdly-campaigned Diego Du Charmil has held illustrious company since, and has chased home the great Altior in each of his last three renewals - picking up a large chunk of place prize money in the process.

Are there any trials for the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle?

There are no trials as such for the Fred Winter Juvenile Hurdle, though there are plenty of opportunities to pick up clues during the season. For instance, horses who shape well in Triumph Hurdle trials without necessarily winning could find themselves as key contenders for the Fred Winter, while winners of useful juvenile races during the season are others who could be pitched into this race.

Who is the most successful jockey in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle?

Rather interestingly, a jockey has yet to win this race more than once, meaning a host share the honour of being the winning-most rider in the Fred Winter. Jockeys on the roll of honour include Sam Twiston-Davies, Richard Johnson, Ruby Walsh and Paul Townend.

Who is the most successful trainer in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle?

The most successful trainer in the history of the Fred Winter is Willie Mullins, who has trained four winners in the race, courtesy of Sanctuaire (2010), Qualando (2015) and Diego Du Charmil (2016).
