Several winners of the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase have gone on to win the biggest prize in Jumps racing, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, later in their careers, though none to have achieved the feat are perhaps quite so popular as the great Denman proved to be. Although useful over hurdles, Denman came into his own over fences, and capped off a stunning novice chasing season by winning the RSA Chase by ten lengths, landing a big gamble and finishing the season unbeaten in the process.
Denman would continue to progress the following season, winning the race now known as the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury and extending his unbeaten run over fences by lowering the colours of the great Kauto Star in the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Denman would subsequently suffer heart problems, something which marred his 2008-09 season, but he finished a brave second to Kauto Star in the 2009 Gold Cup nonetheless, and roared back to form in the 2009 Ladbrokes Trophy, giving away mountains of weight away to the field in the progress. That would prove to be Denman’s final victory, but he would continue to win the hearts of everyone in racing, finishing second in each of the next two renewals in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and settling down for one final tussle with his old rival Kauto Star in the closing stages of the 2011 renewal, before the pair were ultimately outmatched by the younger legs of Nicky Henderson’s Long Run. Denman’s final appearance ended on a low note, when pulled-up in the Aintree Bowl the following month, but he bowed out as one of the greats nonetheless.
