Originally run as a listed event, the John Of Gaunt Stakes was promoted to Group 3 status in 2008 and is now the target for those horses that fall below Group 1 and 2 levels, but have the capabilities of being better than a handicapper. Sir Michael Stoute has a decent record in the race and saddled Main Aim to back-to-back victories in 2009 and 2010, while Safe Voyage was victorious in 2019 which was the springboard to a tilt at the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on British Champions Day.
