Hungerford Stakes Tips
We are giving ENGLISH OAK a chance to bounce back in this Group 2 after he disappointed last time out in the Lennox Stakes. He didn't seem to enjoy Goodwood or the slow pace of that race but he's proven he's classy in the past and can make amends here.
What is the Hungerford Stakes?
The Hungerford Stakes is a Group 2 race run at Newbury in August and is open to horses aged three years or older. Despite only holding Group 2 status, the Hungerford can often see a Group 1 performer take their chance, as they look to recapture the winning thread, and victory in this event can sometimes see the winner go on to compete in Group 1 company later in the season or in the following campaign, with the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot a popular event.
First held in 1949, the Hungerford Stakes was eventually handed Group 2 status in 2006, and has been won by some notable performers in recent seasons. Excelebration was a memorable winner of the 2011 contest for Marco Botti, while Clive Cox's Lethal Force won the 2012 renewal before going on to claim Diamond Jubilee Stakes success at Royal Ascot in 2013.
What happened in the 2023 Hungerford Stakes?
Richard Hannon's Witch Hunter was a shock 12/1 winner of the 2023 Hungerford Stakes as he produced a storming late finish to beat New Endeavour.
