What is the Lockinge Stakes?
The Lockinge Stakes is a Group 1 race run at Newbury in May and is open to horses aged four years or older. One of the premier races contested over a mile, the Lockinge Stakes is a race that can often throw up a classy winner and it's been known for winners of the Lockinge to line up in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot the following month, but in its own right, the Lockinge is a really valuable contest to win.
First held in 1958, the Lockinge has been won by some of the finest equine talents to grace a racecourse with Pall Mall winning the first two renewals of the contest. More recently, Sir Michael Stoute's Soviet Line won back-to-back renewals in 1995 and 1996, while the mighty Frankel was a sensational winner of the 2012 renewal before he went on to win races like the Queen Anne Stakes and the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
