The Queen Mother Champion Chase is the showpiece Grade 1 event on day two of the Cheltenham Festival as the premier 2m chasers do battle in what is one of the most exhilarating National Hunt races on the calendar. We are set for a fabulous renewal in 2023 and looking to retain the crown he won 12 months ago is Energumene, who sits prominently in the betting. Producing a sparkling display in the 2022 Champion Chase, the Willie Mullins-trained star will face a lively rival in last year's Arkle hero Edwardstone, who is a classy performer for Alan King and will be another thrilling runner.
Gary Moore's Editeur Du Gite shocked the pair of those mentioned in the Clarence House Chase at Cheltenham back on Festival Trials day, so he adds more depth to the event, while former runner-up Nube Negra adds more depth to the race. We take look at all the recent trends and statistics for the race here, which could point you in the right direction of the winner.
Queen Mother Champion Chase Trends
- Four of the last 10 winners have been sent off favourite
- No horse has been bigger than 11/1 (Special Tiara in 2017) in the betting in the last 10 renewals
- Seven of the last 10 winners have been trained in the UK
- Six of the last 10 winners had won their previous race before claiming Champion Chase glory
Most Tipped
A spectacular winner of the Arkle Challenge Trophy at last season's Cheltenham Festival, Alan King's EDWARDSTONE will attempt to follow up in the Queen Mother Champion Chase on day two of the meeting and the well-fancied Barbury Castle inmate has proven extremely popular with our racing tipsters. A whopping ten tipsters have napped King's charge, who has failed to get his head in front on his last two starts, but showed in last year's Arkle that he's a real class act around Prestbury Park and he should be a leading contender.
Edwardstone
Biggest Priced Tip
The betting suggests it's all about the front three in the betting, but James Stevens (West Country) is taking on the prominent triumvirate with a huge outsider in the shape of the Paul Nicholls-trained Greaneteen, who is around the 25/1 mark, at the time of writing, and the Ditcheat raider appears to have a lot to do on paper. A former Grade 1 winner in the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown, GREANETEEN has failed to show that sort of class in recent times, so he will need to bounce back to his best here to land a blow.
Greaneteen
HorseRacing.net's Tip
A fascinating renewal as the reigning Champion Chaser, Energumene, locks horns with last year's Arkle hero, Edwardstone, and that pair rightly dominate the betting, but a splash of Editeur Du Gite makes it a cracking renewal. With Editeur Du Gite sure to make the running, both Energumene and Edwardstone will sit off the pace, but it's ENERGUMENE that makes most appeal as he produced a tremendous display in last year's event against some top notch performers. Edwardstone will be doing all his best work in the closing stages, but he may just lack that crucial turn of pace coming down the hill and Energumene can get the hop on him.
