Fiddlerontheroof
Age: 8
Trainer: Colin Tizzard
Chase Runs: 10
Chase Wins: 2
Notable Race Wins: 2020 Tolworth Novices' Hurdle, 2021 Colin Parker Memorial Chase
Having been a smart bumper horse for John Walsh in Ireland, Fiddlerontheroof switched to the stable of Colin Tizzard for his hurdling campaign, and he was first seen finishing second in the Grade 2 Persian War Novices' Hurdle at Chepstow. He showed his class over hurdles at the start of 2020 as he was a mightily-impressive winner of the Grade 1 Tolworth Novices' Hurdle at Sandown Park, but he failed to build on that effort when down the field behind Shishkin in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival.
Sent over fences the following campaign, Fiddlerontheroof only managed to get his head in front once over the larger obstacles - which came at Exeter in a beginners chase - but he placed in some top notch events during his novice season, and was a fine runner-up behind Monkfish in the Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices' Chase at Cheltenham last March. A well beaten third behind Chantry House in the Mildmay Novices' Chase at Aintree on his last novice start, Fiddlerontheroof's chasing career has really blossomed this term.
A winner of the Listed Colin Parker Memorial Chase at Carlisle on his first start this season, Fiddlerontheroof was then a fine runner-up to Cloudy Glen in the Ladbrokes Trophy, as having stayed on in the closing stages of that Newbury showpiece he was unable to reel in the winner. Last seen finishing second to Fortescue in a Listed event at Ascot, Tizzard's eight-year-old maintained his fine record of being placed over fences (never out of first three), and he will now head to Aintree aiming to sparkle over the fences.
A solid jumper, he should have no real issues taking to the unique fences, and he is certainly one of the classier horses taking their chance, but his stamina will certainly be tested as he steps up notably in trip, but he has to be considered a notable challenger for glory in a hugely competitive race.
