13:50 Kempton - Pendle Novices' Chase
Rubaud heads the market for this race but on the back of what looked a tough enough test in having the kitchen sink thrown at him to try to reel in L'Eau Du Sud last weekend, I am willing to take him on in this Grade 2 affair. He is the best horse on official figures and has taken to chasing relatively well after only starting over the big obstacles late into the season, with Paul Nicholls still wanting to use him successfully to pick up a decent hurdling prize earlier in the campaign. However, I've not been impressed with the way they've abandoned front running with him over fences and while that may have been due to the talent of the horses he's been beaten by, I'm happy to take him on.
IMPERIAL SAINT is a horse I've supported with success already this season at Aintree a few times and I think Kempton should really suit him judging by what we've seen of his run style thus far. He also receives weight from plenty in this field with more experience - as does Rubaud, to be fair, - and in this his first attempt outside of handicap company I am expecting a bold show. Ashdale Bob is the sole Irish raider in the field and has a chance on his best form for Jessica Harrington but I'd be a smidgen disappointed if it's not one of the novices who triumphs and I think the Hobbs and White runner Imperial Saint is the one to side with at around 9/4.
14:40 Southwell - BetUK Hever Sprint Stakes
The first of a mammoth nine races at Southwell today - I won't be having a bet in every contest but good luck if you are - is the pick of the bunch and I think MARSHMAN should be shorter in the betting having finally started to fulfil the potential he's always had on the AW surface. He was thought of in the highest regard as a two and three year old and contested plenty of the biggest turf races, but lost his way somewhat at the back end of his three year old and for the totality of his four year old campaign.
The dreaded scissors were reached for and post gelding, he has looked a much more straightforward proposition for Karl Burke, with the horse utilising his undoubted rapid pace in the correct sections of his races. He is hat trick hunting here after commanding wins at Newcastle and Lingfield recently and the latter in particular in a Listed race was very impressive, with him always looking much the best. He is penalised for that win which won't help his cause against smart animals like Diligent Harry, but I'm in no doubt he's the most talented and fastest horse in this field and he can continue his resurgence with this big win on ITV.
