14:25 Sandown - Atalanta Stakes
I was surprised when the odds were released for this race and TAMFANA was not odds-on across the board, so with 11/10 on offer widely I cannot recommend anything other than a strong win punt on her. There are improvers in this field who could well be more at the peak of their powers, for this season at least, than David Menuiseur's filly who has been on the go since May and her excellent fourth in the 1000 Guineas when she (arguably) should have won the Classic.
That is by far and away the best form on offer in this contest so while there are stones to be thrown at her, but with this drop in distance sure to suit, the drop in grade an obvious help and the fact she has had nigh on fifty days to rest from a busy early part of the season, I cannot see past her. The main danger could come from potential pace angle Doom for William Haggas, who has been a bit of a place machine like Tamfana this season - albeit in weaker races.
15:15 Chester - Chester Stakes
With it being all but confirmed by Ruby Walsh, who is deep in the Closutton brain hive, that this is a retrieval mission on the way to the Irish Leger and Melbourne Cup for favourite Absurde, it makes sense to try to take on the 9/4 favourite. He could well have the class to win this race even not fully wound up, but he did bomb out last time out behind Grosvenor Square and I couldn't have him no my mind at the prices.
There are some smart horses in this race who would give him plenty to think about even if he was cherry ripe, with the one I'm keen to side with Cauis Chorister being the obvious one given her group class form. Her team are in form and she should get the lead here, but she could well get that plan scuppered by last year's winner Shanroe. She is probably the most likely winner and I may be overthinking this, but if she is distracted by a pace battle then that could leave the door open for something else and REAL DREAM the third favourite is the one I fancy to come storming home late.
Sir Michael Stoute's charge has had a break since a below par run at York on his first attempt in this sort of company, and does have to contend with a wide draw albeit that may not be too consequential in a race of this length. I am convinced this is a group class stayer in the making and am willing to forgive him one bad run after a break and at a track - and more importantly in a race that tactically - looks sure to suit.
