What is the Irish St Leger?
The Irish St Leger is the Irish equivalent of the St Leger at Doncaster, and is run over a distance of one mile and six furlongs. It is the final classic of the Irish Flat season, and traditionally takes place on the second day of Irish Champions Weekend - which tends to fall on the day after the Doncaster classic. Unlike with the Town Moor classic, the Irish Leger is often used as a tune up race for older horses before more prestigious targets, such as the Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot or the Melbourne Cup.
