What is the Ascot Stakes?
The solitary handicap race on day one of Royal Ascot, the Ascot Stakes is often one of the toughest betting heats of the entire week as Flat and National Hunt trainers lock horns bidding for victory in the marathon event.
A race that can see more experienced campaigners go into battle, the Ascot Stakes has become one of the most fascinating races on the opening day, and it's not unknown to see runners in this event go on to compete at the Cheltenham Festival later in their careers, while the odd time a future Ascot Gold Cup horse could emerge as they progress through handicaps into Pattern company.
What happened in the 2020 Ascot Stakes?
Alan King's Coeur de Lion reeled in Verdana Blue and Summer Moon to claim victory in the Ascot Stakes, which was the final race on day one of the 2020 Royal Ascot extravaganza. It appeared that Verdana Blue was going to land the prize for Nicky Henderson, as he pushed to the front ahead of Summer Moon, but Coeur de Lion came round the outside with a rattling finish to claim a fine win for the Barbury Castle yard.
