What is the Commonwealth Cup?
The Commonwealth Cup is a Group One race for three-year-olds run over six furlongs and is the showpiece race on day four of Royal Ascot.
First run in 2015, the Commonwealth Cup is the newest race on the Royal Ascot schedule and replaced the Buckingham Palace Stakes. Run over six furlongs, it takes place over the same distance as the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, but this contest is only open to three-year-old horses. So, it can sometimes see those horses that have failed to see out the one mile distance of the Guineas races earlier in the season dropping back to six furlongs and looking for Group One success.
What happened in the 2020 Commonwealth Cup?
Clive Cox's Golden Horde was a superb winner of the Commonwealth Cup, as the 5/1 shot pulled clear of American raider Kimari in the closing stages to grab Group One victory. Mums Tipple set the early fractions, but was unable to maintain the gallop as they got to the business end of the race, and it was Golden Horde, who was prominent throughout, who picked up for his jockey Adam Kirby's urgings, and went on to comfortably beat Kimari, while Ventura Rebel bagged third spot.
