The course at Brighton is used for flat racing and is one of only three courses in the United Kingdom (Epsom and Newmarket the other culprits) that is not actually a full circuit; the course is shaped like an extended horseshoe which is a mile and a half in length and is left handed sharp track.
When the full length of the course is used a public road has to be closed for the duration of the races and laid over with turf from the track to cover the tarmac.
Each year the course hosts 20 fixtures which will include the three day Brighton Festival of Racing which is held at the beginning of August includes the John Smith’s Brighton Mile as well as a Ladies Day.
For sprint races horses drawn with low numbers will have a slight advantage but for other races there is no draw bias except on really soft ground when those drawn in low numbers may have a disadvantage as runners are more likely to go towards the stand rail.
The course is favoured by Seb Sanders and former Champion Jockey and local Ryan Moore who both do particularly well here as does Moores’ father the trainer Gary Moore who is based nearby in Lower Beeding.
