Located in the idyllic village of Blackwell in Cumbria near the Lake District, the course is right handed and is one mile and four furlongs in length that forms into a pear shaped course, the final part of the course is a tough half mile incline. It plays host to both flat racing and national hunt racing.
The track hosts around 23 race days annually and the key races that are held here include the Cumberland Plate, Carlisle Bell as well as the Weatherby’s Graduation Chase Day.
The course made racing history on July 2nd 1929 when it was by the newly created Totalisator Board who ran their pool betting system for the first time in what is now referred to as the Tote. On top of this the racing legend Red Rum won here in the September prior to each of his Grand National wins.
There is a draw stall advantage in races of up to a mile for those drawn at a high number and although it is a right handed course runners in the centre during the home straight do have an advantage.
Top jockey at this course is Paul Hanagan and the most consistent trainer here is Richard Fahey who is based at Musley Bank.
