About the Jack Richards Novices' Handicap Chase
The Jack Richards Novices' Handicap Chase is a Grade 2 limited handicap chase for novices aged five and over, run over 2 miles 4 furlongs and 127 yards on the New Course at Cheltenham. It is registered as the Golden Miller Novices' Chase, a race first run in 2011 that was a Grade 1 contest until 2024, before becoming a handicap sponsored by Jack Richards & Son from 2025. It is the second race on day three of the Cheltenham Festival.
Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden won the first running of the handicap with front-runner Caldwell Potter in 2025, a victory that gave Nicholls a record 50th Festival winner. In 2026 MEETMEBYTHESEA won for Ben Pauling, Ben Jones and owner JP McManus, beating Willie Mullins' Gold Dancer by 4¾ lengths. Both winners were British-trained, and neither of the joint-favourites won in 2026, with Regent's Stroll finishing third at 5/1.
