The Derby Meeting

The Epsom Derby meeting will have a new look in 2020, as both the Derby and Oaks will be run on the same day which will serve up a scintillating day's action on the Downs on Saturday 4th July. You can check out all the races to assess the runners, odds and our exclusive tips taking place on the day here.

Usually the Derby meeting is run over two days at Epsom Racecourse on the first weekend of June. The Oaks would take centre stage on the Friday of the meeting, the third Classic to be run in the flat season, with the Derby Saturday's big race.

In 2020 due to the COVID outbreak and the condensed flat racing season, the meeting is taking place on one day with a mix of seven races.

The meeting gets underway with the Woodcote Stakes at 1.50pm, which will be screened live on ITV1. This conditions race for two year olds was won in 2019 by the exciting Pinatubo who was subsequently sent off the favourite in this year's 2000 Guineas, where he finished third before going on to finish second in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

Second up on the card is the Listed Surrey Stakes (2.25pm) run over seven furlongs for three year olds. Won in 2019 by Space Blues for Charlie Appleby who also trained the Woodcote winner Pinatubo.

The Investec Oaks will be run at 3.40pm. The third classic of the season this historic race is for three-year-old fillies and run over a mile and a half. The historic Group 1 contest was first run in 1779 and has been won by legends of the sport in the past such as Oh So Sharp, Ouija Board, Minding and Enable. Last year the race went to Anapurna for trainer John Gosden, giving jockey Frankie Dettori his fifth win in the race. This year's favourite is the 1000 Guineas winner Love bidding to give trainer Aidan O'Brien an eighth winner in the race, whilst Dettori could well be in the plate for John Gosden's Frankie Darling, the Frankel filly who was so impressive when landing the Ribblesdale at Ascot. The Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes is off at 4.15pm, run over a mile for three year old fillies and mares. First raced in 1995, Frankie Dettori is once is the top jockey for this contest, winning the race six times.

The highlight of the day is the Epsom Derby. Run at 4.55pm the race is sure to draw a big audience on television with the meeting being run behind closed doors. The fourth Classic of the season, the contest is run over a mile and a half for the best three year old colts and fillies (fillies would usually line up in the Oaks).

Flat racing's most popular race was first run way back in 1780 and this year we could see a new record being broken if Aidan O'Brien trains the winner. The Ballydoyle maestro has saddled seven winners since 2001 and holds the joint record for the most wins with Robert Robson, John Porter and Fred Darling, and has a chance with the likes of Russian Emperor, Mogul and Vatican City.

Russian Emperor came out on top in the Hampton Court Stakes ahead of the Queen-owned First Receiver who could also line up at Epsom.

The favourite for the race could be the Ed Walker trained English King who comes here pretty fresh after winning the Lingfield Derby Trial impressively.

Meanwhile, its 2000 Guineas trained Kameko is also fancied in what looks like being a very open renewal of the race for trainer Andrew Balding, stepping up in trip, whilst Military March looks like Godolphin's best chance of winning the race they've saddled just the one winner in.

There's also two handicaps to get stuck into from a betting point of view, the Investec Handicap Stakes at 3.00pm and the meeting concludes with the Investec Zebra Handicap at 5.35pm. Click on any of the race links to get the latest odds and betting for each race of the meeting.
