Located in the village of Fontwell the course is a popular national hunt racecourse and is one of only two steeple chase circuits in England that are run over a figure of eight, with the hurdles track being a left handed oval.
A bad jump here can put the race out of contention but a good jump can see a horse gain up to five lengths. The course is favoured by AP McCoy who is one of the top jockeys here along with Jamie Moore. The top trainer here is Gary Moore who has stables nearby in Lower Beeding.
The feature race here is the Grade Two National Spirit Hurdle which is run in February and it is acknowledged as a Cheltenham Festival trial. Winners of the race have included My Way de Solzen in 2006 that then went onto to win the World Hurdle.
The course was the location of the first ever win for one of Queen Elizabeth II horses, in October 1949 her horse Monaveen won the Chichester Handicap Chase.
