What is the Temple Stakes?
The Temple Stakes is a Group 2 race run over five furlongs and takes place at Haydock Park in May. Open to horses aged three years or older, the Temple Stakes is a fiercely contested sprint that attracts a stellar line-up of speedsters, and it can work as a trial for the likes of the King's Stand Stakes and Nunthorpe Stakes, which are both ran later in the season and hold Group 1 status.
First run in 1965, the Temple Stakes has been won by some star horses with one eye-catching winner coming in the 1990 running. Dayjur stormed to victory to land the spoils before going on to win the King's Stand, Nunthorpe Stakes, and Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp. More recently, Kyllachy (2002), Kingsgate Native (2010, 2012) and Sole Power (2011) have all landed victory, while Battaash (2018, 2019) scorched the turf to win back-to-back renewals.
