What is the Irish 2000 Guineas?
The Irish 2000 Guineas is one of the star attractions of the Flat season in Ireland and is a race that attracts a multitude of elite three-year-olds, who attempt to etch their name into an illustrious roll of honour. Taking place in mid-June, the Irish 2000 Guineas is a race that can be used as a springboard to the Irish Derby or alternatively the Investec Derby at Epsom or even Royal Ascot, but it's a prestigious event in its own right and the Curragh deliver a magnificent product around the Classic.
First run in 1921, the Irish 2000 Guineas has been won by some of the finest racehorses of the modern era, but one man has dominated the contest in recent times and that man is Aidan O'Brien. With his victories now into double figures in the race as a trainer, O'Brien's Ballydoyle operation have become the dominant force with the likes of Rock Of Gibraltar (2002) and Henrythenavigator (2008) just two of the most notable winners from O'Brien's stable, who both then went on to compete at Royal Ascot.
What happened in the 2020 Irish 2000 Guineas?
Siskin was a spectacular winner of the 2020 Irish 2000 Guineas, as the Ger Lyons-trained raider was forced to pull himself out of a pocket before unleashing a searing burst of speed to propel to the front and pull comfortably clear of the Aidan O'Brien-trained Vatican City. With the O'Brien team saddling a multitude of runners, they were always going to try and hinder the chances of Siskin, but the unbeaten colt proved to be far too good for his rivals and maintained his 100% record with aplomb.
