The Challow Novice Hurdle is a Grade One contest run over a trip of two miles and four furlongs at Newbury racecourse at the end of December or the start of January.
The Challow is one of the key races of the season for the best novice hurdlers over the intermediate trip with the horses in this race often destined for bigger and better things.

What happened in the 2023 Challow Novices' Hurdle?
For the fourth season in a row, Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden combined to win the Challow Hurdle with CAPTAIN TEAGUE getting the job done in decent enough style.
The history of the Challow Novices Hurdle
First run in 1971, the Challow was initially run as a juvenile hurdle before being opened up to older horses during the 1981/82 season.
The race generally tends to be run at the end of December but is on occasion run on the first weekend of the following January which can mean that two editions of the race can be run in the same calendar year.
The race is a traditional breeding ground for the starts of the future with the horses who perform well at Newbury often heading to the Cheltenham Festival for the Turners Novices' Hurdle of the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle.
Who is the most iconic winner of the Challow Novices' Hurdle?
The Challow has proven to be an increasingly important race over the past decade or so with horses like Bindaree, Taquin du Seuil and Diamond Harry all claiming the victory. There is no doubt which horses is the best though when it comes to the roll of honour with the legendary Denman claiming the victory in 2006. "The Tank" would go on to win the Ladbrokes Trophy twice off top weight, the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase and the Cheltenham Gold Cup but it was in the Challow where we first saw just how good the Paul Nicholls trained horse would become.
