What is the Denman Chase?

The Denman Chase is a Grade Two race run over a trip of just under three miles at Newbury each season.

The race, which takes place in February, includes eighteen fences to be jumped and is open to horses aged five and above. A big Grade Two race in its own right, the Denman Chase is perhaps better known as the last key trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the UK.

Plenty of horses head to Newbury for one last run before heading to Prestbury Park the following month which ensures it is a crucial date on the calendar. The race is part of an excellent card at the Newbury venue with the Betfair Hurdle and Game Spirit Chase also on offer for punters to follow.

The race is of course named after the legendary Denman who twice won the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury as well as the 2008 edition of this race when it was known as the Aon Chase.

The history of the Denman Chase

The Denman Chase is very much a 21st Century race having been first run in 2000.

It was upgraded to a Listed event in 2002 and a Grade Two in 2003 and has been won by some of the most famous names in the history of the sport in the intervening years.

The Newbury affair has been disrupted by weather a number of times with the 2009 edition taking place at Kempton Park and the 2016 running taking lace at Ascot due to the conditions at the Berkshire course.

The race offers trainers one last chance to get a prep run into their Cheltenham Gold Cup contenders with just over a month between the two races as the current calendar stands.

Who is the most iconic winner of the Denman Chase?

The Denman Chase roll of honour is a short list but it remains a glittering one with star names littered across the winners board.

Denman is of course worth a special mention give that the race is named after him, while similar comments apply to See More Business, Long Run, Coneygree and Native River who all have a Denman Chase and a Gold Cup on their records.

Out on his own though is the great Kauto Star who won this back in 2007 before going on to win the big one at Cheltenham the following month for Paul Nicholls.

Are there any trials for the Denman Chase?

The Gold cup route is a straightforward one with a limited number of races available for horses at this level and over this trip which means it can be quite easy to get an idea of potential runners.

The King George tends to be the obvious race to follow in terms of looking out for potential Newbury runners with Clan Des Obeaux the best example of that winning both races last winter for Paul Nicholls. It is also possible that we will see Ladbrokes Trophy runners return to the same venue for the Denman Chase with the course form also worth taking note of heading into the race.

The race is also the final chance for a horse to have a prep run before Cheltenham which means horses that have had interrupted campaigns are likely to be considered for the race with the aim of getting their fitness levels up.
