Kitty's Light - Christian Williams
KITTY’S LIGHT bounded to glory in this race last season seven days after a fine run in the Scottish Grand National, and is back to try and emulate Topsham Bay by winning back-to-back renewals of the race. He is a worthy favourite lining up off a 5lbs higher mark in the 2024 edition and should he prove no worse for wear for his big run in the Grand National at Aintree this year, he should be there or thereabouts.
He is known to be a horse who thrives later in the year and on good ground so providing the expected rain on Saturday falls after racing concludes, he should have all conditions in his favour and is well fancied to go well once more.
Amirite - Henry De Bromhead
The sole Irish representative in the field that does not hail from Closutton, AMIRITE has Rachael Blackmore booked and looks a fascinating runner for Henry De Bromhead. This horse was last seen back in 2023 behind Meetingofthewaters at Leopardstown, and before that pulled up in the Irish National won by I Am Maximus.
That would not scream that he is in need of a marathon test, however he is still very lightly raced and racing off just 11 stone in here he could come forward leaps and bounds following the break he has been given by his trainer.
Le Milos - Dan Skelton
Punted off the boards for the Pertemps at Cheltenham last time out over hurdles, LE MILOS was disappointing for a team who apart from this could seem to do no wrong on the biggest week of the year. Nevertheless, his high class chase form makes him a contender in here off 149.
He did of course win the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury back in 2022 off just a three pound lower mark and on that day he looked like he could well be destined for graded prizes. That has not quite transpired, but switching back to fences could see him bounce right back to his best.
Nick Rockett - Willie Mullins
Willie Mullins would really be rubbing salt into the wounds of his rivals Dan Skelton and Paul Nicholls were he to snag this last big prize of the British season, and rubbing salt could be on the agenda as he looks to have an excellent chance with his trio, especially NICK ROCKET
Still only seven and very highly rated at Closutton, the Mullins runner was sent off favourite for the Irish National at Fairyhouse last time out but could only manage seventh. He will have come on for that run undoubtedly and with a nice enough looking racing weight and good ground potentially suiting him, he looks the pick of the Irish challenge for a team in scintillating form in these British marathon races.
Threeunderthrufive - Paul Nicholls
Top weight THREEUNDERTHRUFIVE represents a man in Paul Nicholls who needs a minor miracle to retain his trainers' title, but winning this race would be a big help and his charge must have a big chance even with the burden of top weight..
He is undoubtedly one who needs a stern test of stamina to be seen to best effect, and although perhaps not quite living up to the hype he had behind him in his younger years he did at least get back on the winning trail last time out at Ascot. A four pound rise for that success seems fair enough and if this race does become a real test with plenty making the pace a stiff one, the Ditcheat runner will relish it.
Minella Cocooner - Willie Mullins
MINELLA COCOONER was a really promising novice hurdler, as shown by his second in the Albert Bartlett, but it's safe to say over fences he is yet to really scale the same heights. Nevertheless, looking through his form he has shown a clear liking for good ground over heavy or soft, so perhaps this Sandown ground will be the key to him hitting his stride.
He would probably be a bigger price were he trained by anyone else, but as Mullins has shown with Macdermott last week and countless others this season, he can wave his magic wand and transform horses.
