Death Duty
Age: 11
Trainer: Gordon Elliott
Chase Runs: 13
Chase Wins: 4
Notable Race Wins: 2017 Drinmore Novice Chase
Gordon Elliott's Death Duty was a hugely exciting staying novice chaser and he showed his class when bounding to glory in the 2017 Grade 1 Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse. However, since that success five years ago he's flattered to deceive over fences and now 11 years old he will be having his first crack at the Grand National.
He was off for over 750 days between 2017 and 2020, so he's still relatively lightly-raced for a veteran and has been victorious in four of his 13 chase starts, and he showed when winning the Grand National Trial at Punchestown earlier in the season that on his day he can perform with credit, however, he often blows a lot more cold than hot these days.
Having finished seventh in the Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park three starts ago, he then went on to win the Grand National Trial at Punchestown off 138, and he ran a decent race off a 6lbs higher mark at the Cheltenham Festival as he finished sixth in the Ultima Handicap Chase.
Lining up off the same mark of 144 on Saturday afternoon, Death Duty could be dangerously handicapped if build on that Cheltenham run, but he needs to produce a career best to claim National glory.
