Festive Racing Tips: Five British Horses to Follow This Christmas
All eyes on Kempton Park for the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day but there’s so much more to the Christmas racing calendar than that, with several festive meetings across the country.
There’s Grade 1 action at Aintree with the Formby Novices' Hurdle while Chepstow hosts their traditional Welsh Grand National fixture on 27th December. Just a few days later, we have the Challow Novices Hurdle at Newbury before New Year’s Day at Cheltenham.
Here, I’ve had a look at five British horses to follow – both in the coming days and for the rest of the jumps season – and hopefully I can lead you to a winner or two. We start with a potential superstar for the Dan Skelton yard…

13:05 Aintree, 26th - Formby Novices' Hurdle
The current Supreme Novices Hurdle favourite and a long odds on shot to win the Grade 1 at Aintree on Boxing Day, MYDADDYPADDY has been talked up as a potential superstar and he now has the platform to lay down a marker in the division.
With Act Of Innocence and Skylight Hustle opting for other targets, the race is there for the taking and he’d want to be winning this well enough if he is to win a Supreme. While the general consensus is split on him, I’m definitely in his corner.
Dan Skelton has never tried to hide his admiration for this horse and he may be destined to go right to the very top. He’s done everything easily so far and I for one cannot wait to see him go for Grade 1 glory at Aintree – I think he could be a proper, proper horse.
13:55 Kempton, 26th - Christmas Hurdle
From an unproven type to a type with a point to prove, SIR GINO has been off the track for 364 days but he is undoubtedly the class act in the field. If he retains his ability, then he will almost certainly justify his short price at Kempton Park on Boxing Day.
There must be an element of doubt though, especially when you consider that trainer Nicky Henderson revealed Sir Gino nearly died as a result of his issues. Having said that, he is six from six under rules, having won two Grade 1 races over hurdles.
He was brilliant on chase debut when beating Ballyburn here last year but he reverts to hurdles and he could be a warm order for the Champion Hurdle in March. He is a short price to prevail and I hope he can produce the goods on his return to the track.
13:55 Kempton, 27th - Wayward Lad Novices' Chase
Still only a 4-year-old, MAMBONUMBERFIVE has taken his form to a whole new level since going over fences and he looks well placed to strike in this Grade 2. It could be a strong race if they all stand their ground but we won’t know final declarations until Boxing Day.
Ben Pauling can do no wrong at the minute, with his runners operating at a 28% strike rate over the past two weeks. He is very well matched with Lump Sum on official ratings but Mambonumberfive undoubtedly has the higher upside given his profile.
Bought to be a chaser, connections wasted no time in going over the bigger obstacles and hopefully that decision pays dividends. At the time of writing, he is a 7/2 chance in the betting and that could look big come race day.

14:50 Chepstow, 27th - Welsh Grand National
I’ve been sweet on the chances of GIT MAKER in this race for a while now and I remain hopeful of a huge run despite a dry forecast. His best form is on soft ground but he is an extremely well handicapped horse and conditions at Chepstow might not matter.
Jamie Snowden admitted that he struggled to keep him right last season but reports out of Folly House suggest that Git Maker is thriving this winter. With Gavin Sheehan likely to ride, he can go very close for one of the shrewdest trainers in the game.
Any additional rain would be appreciated but there should be enough juice in the ground after a very wet December. Git Maker has been touted for a big staying handicap for the best part of two years now and 27th December could be his day.

15:00 Newbury, 29th - Challow Novices' Hurdle
I was at Ffos Las the day that KALKBRENNER won his maiden hurdle and he was certainly impressive on the eye, and the form has worked out reasonably well. If he takes up his engagement at Newbury, I’d expect him to be bang in contention.
Kalkbrenner has already been touted as a future chaser but that’s not to suggest that he can’t win a Graded race over hurdles first. He was giving Klimt Madrik 6lbs the last day and was beaten by a head so he’d be well placed to reverse that form.
With Max McNeill stating that No Drama This End is 60-40 to run at Newbury, I’d be inclined to take him on. If he runs, you’ve still got an each way price but if he doesn’t then I’d expect Kalkbrenner to be much shorter than his current 7/1 figure.
