What is the Sussex Stakes?
The Sussex Stakes is a Group 1 race contested over one mile and takes place during Glorious Goodwood. Attracting the premier milers from across the UK, Ireland and Europe, the Sussex Stakes is one of the most valuable Flat races on the calendar, and you can often see horses compete in the race that have run at Royal Ascot earlier in the season. One of the big summer festivals in horse racing, the Sussex Stakes will continue to be one of the showpiece events and its history is littered with magnificent winners.
First held in 1841, the Sussex Stakes has been won by some superstars with Brigadier Gerard claiming victory in the 1971 renewal, while Rock Of Gibraltar was a fine winner of the 2002 running. However, one horse that lights up the roll of honour is the mighty Frankel, who built on a win in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2011 to land the 2011 Sussex Stakes, while a year later the Sir Henry Cecil-trained legend retained his crown in fine style to continue his dominance in the mile division.
What happened in the 2020 Sussex Stakes?
A rip-snorting renewal of the 2020 Sussex Stakes saw a sparkling field line up, but it was the Marcus Tregoning-trained Moohather that produced a blistering late turn of foot to outclass his rivals and claim victory in the Group 1 contest. Circus Maximus was in front as they ventured into the business end of the race and he was giving no racing room to Kameko in behind. However, race favourite Siskin and Moohather unleashed their challenges down the outside, and it was the latter that produced a fine late surge to claim the victory from Circus Maximus.
Mohaather streaks down the outside to win the Qatar Sussex Stakes!
