What is the Chester Cup?
The Chester Cup is a handicap race run at Chester during their coveted May meeting, and the marathon contest attracts a host of top notch staying handicappers from the UK. Open to horses aged four years or older, the Chester Cup can sometimes be used as a springboard to the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, but most winners of the race often stay in the handicap sphere and compete in all the premier staying handicaps the Flat racing calendar has to offer.
First run in 1826, the Chester Cup has been run over a whole plethora of distance, but it's current distance of 2m 2f and 147 yards was first raced over in the 1994 renewal, and it's continued to grow from strength. One of the early season highlights, the Chester Cup has had some notable winners down the years with the dual-purpose star Overturn a memorable winner of the 2011 renewal, while in 2015 Trip To Paris was victorious before going on to land Gold Cup glory at Royal Ascot a month later.
What happened in the 2025 Chester Cup?
James Owen's EAST INDIA DOCK was comfortably the best horse in the race and claimed glory on the Roodee in 2025.
