What is the Dante Stakes?
The Dante Stakes is a Group 2 contest for three-year-old colts over a distance of a mile and two furlongs. It is traditionally held at York in May, and is one of the most prestigious trials for the Epsom Derby in the racing calendar. Since its inception in 1958, ten Dante winners have gone on to win the Derby, with the most recent being Golden Horn in 2015. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the race was run as a standalone Group 2 contest after the Derby in July, and was won by the Mark Johnston-trained Thunderous.
What happened in the 2020 Dante Stakes?
The 2020 renewal of the Dante will forever remembered as not being a trial for the Derby, and was instead run as a standalone Group 2 contest after Epsom due to the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. The unbeaten Frankel colt Highest Ground was a warm order in the betting to take this after impressing at Haydock on his previous start, and although he was able to battle to the front two out, he could not thwart the sustained late challenge of Thunderous, who showed plenty of resolve to get up late in the day.
