Epsom Oaks Tips
Ylang Ylang is bred to kick on over middle distances and her staying on fifth in the 1000 Guineas was a tried and tested prep run for Oaks glory. Nevertheless, with her price contracting all the time there can be little value in backing her and looking beyond the Aidan O'Brien favourite, there could be value in backing SEAWARD each-way at a huge price.
She was beaten fair and square by stablemate Forest Fairy at Chester last time out in the Cheshire Oaks but was a fresh horse that day while her stablemate had had a run, She also gave the rest of the field a lead and perhaps ridden a bit more patiently could improve further at Epsom so with odds as big as 66/1 on offer, she rates the bet in what could be - barring the favourite - an open Classic.
About The Oaks
The Oaks is a Group 1 Flat race run at Epsom Downs and is the showpiece event for three-year-old fillies.
First run in 1779, The Oaks is regarded as one of the most prestigious races in the world and is the second leg of the Fillies' Triple Crown. A filly can achieve the Triple Crown by winning the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, The Oaks at Epsom, and then finally land victory in the St Leger at Doncaster, although very few attempts to tackle it. Over the years there have been some superstar winners of The Oaks with Musidora (1949), Salsabil (1990), and Enable (2017) just three of those phenomenal fillies to taste victory.
What happened in the 2023 Oaks?
John & Thady Gosden's Soul Sister was a dominant winner of the 2023 Oaks as the classy filly stormed clear of Savethelastdance, who finished second, with Caernarfon back in third.
